Candidate Tarkington Accuses President Wellian of Being Soulless

“Well, she’s sure getting some media coverage now,” I said, as Cynthia showed me the paper, even though she knew that the Times was in my newspaper stack.

“She’s just doing what her campaign manager recommended she do,” Cynthia replied. “She’s telling her truth, pure and simple.”

I stared long and hard at my assistant. “And how would you know what Stella told her to do?”

Cynthia smiled like a cat who’d just swallowed a canary. “Oh, I have my ways,” was all she said.

“Don’t tell me you have someone on the inside of Tarkington’s campaign headquarters.”

“Maybe…” she replied coyly. “What do you think about her comment?”

“That our esteemed POTUS has no soul?” I asked. “I don’t know, it seems pretty obvious to me if you look at his draconian policies, but it feels a little bit like pointing out to the emperor that he’s wearing no clothes. It might be true, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t also dangerous to point it out.”

“Whatever happened to the person who pointed out that the emperor was naked?” Cynthia asked.

“Hmm, I don’t have the foggiest idea. I’m not really into reading fairy tales these days. Why don’t you get Bridgette on the research team to look into it. They don’t seem to be doing much else these days.”

“I might just do that, but I’ll Google it first.” She turned and walked out of the office.

She reported to me later that her research revealed it took an innocent child to point out the obvious nakedness of the emperor, but she wasn’t sure what happened to the kid. Probably went into politics, I thought, or rolled the simple truth into a reality TV show.
